While living there she experiences a new world altogether, gets a new friend Clara, meets Clara’s grandmother who teaches her about God, encounters a servant, who always makes her unhappy. Story progresses and Heidi starts living her life at Sesemann house. One day Aunt Dete reappears and takes her away from the peaceful life of mountains to Frankfurt as a little companion to a wheelchair-bound girl, Clara Sesemann. Soon Heidi started loving the mountain life. Heidi makes a new friend, a little boy named Peter, a goatherd who lives with her grandmother. Surprisingly, grandfather turns out to be very welcoming and caring. However, villagers warn Dete not to leave Heidi with the old man as they think that he is a harsh hermit who has rejected religion and lives far from civilization. Novel starts with the scene of Aunt Dete taking her niece Heidi, to her grandfather who lives in the mountains of Swiss Alps.ĭete, who has taken care of Heidi for long, but now she is not able to do the same because she has got a new job in Frankfurt. And I quite enjoyed the ending with her wealthy Frankfurt “family” that supplied her with many comforts.Heidi by Johanna Spyri is a short classic tale of a little orphan girl named Heidi. I loved the genuine and sweet, orphan girl (Heidi, of course).

The Secret Garden was published 20 years later… And the perfection of A Little PrincessĪll the ways this book was similar to A Little Princess was the reason I enjoyed this book. But to be honest, I can’t really point fingers at Heidi. I mean, one of the characters was in a wheel chair and then she learned to walk. Combined with a hint of The Secret Garden As a reader, I don’t care what your agenda is – I just don’t want to the agenda distracting me from the story. It’s not that I mind those things, but when they’re done through children’s novels, it’s pretty apparent what the agenda is. The over-flowing piety and moral indoctrination got a bit exhausting after a while. Will Heidi ever see her grandfather again? A classic tale of a young girl's coming-of-age, of friendship, and familial love. She leads an idyllic life, until she is forced to leave the mountain she has always known to go and live with a sickly girl in the city. Orphaned Heidi lives with her gruff but caring grandfather on the side of Swiss mountain, where she befriends young Peter the goat-herd. Published by Kingfisher on November 15th 2002

I’m just saying that Heidi by Johanna Spyri reminded me of a lot of the other children’s classics I’ve read lately… if you took them and set them up in the Swiss Alps. Now, I’m not saying that anyone ripped anyone off.
